Kelva Beach (Around
Mumbai)

One
of the important beaches, Kelve offers the visitor a
wide expanse of the Arabian Sea. Located only 8 kms from
Palghar, the beach has the largest
stretch (around 7 kms) of coastline. The place is packed
with visitors from Mumbai, Vapi, Valsad and other
far-off places, especially on weekends and holidays. For
the religious minded, the Sheetladevi Temple is located
near the beach. An annual fair here is the other
feature. For budget-visitors, there are a number of
private lodges and houses, who extend their hospitality
to the visitors.
MAHIM:
The
"Bowl of the Taluka," as it is often referred
to. Located just 5 kms from here, the place takes its
name after the Mahikavati temple which is the village
main place of worship. A quite seaside town, it is known
for the number of bananas like Rajeli, Tenbeli, Mutheli
and Velchi varieties. Fruits and coconuts are abundantly
grown, with the betel-leaves orchards outnumbering all.
These leaves are regularly exported to Middle-East and
Far-East countries, besides being in great demand from
the Mumbai market.
SHIRGAON
FORT:
This
place is famous for its heritage fort, which dates back
to the British period, and is a famous picnic spot. The
Arabian Sea is just behind the fort, which
offers a panoramic view. Located just 7 kms, it is a
quick get-a-way. A proposal has been put up to the
Tourism Ministry to give this place a "tourist
centre" status.
SATPATI
PORT
:
A fishing village, 12 kms from Palghar. It has rich
marine products wealth and it is from here, varieties of
sea products are exported mainly to Middle East nations.
Many ice factories here provide ice-slabs to keep the
products fresh. A proposal is pending with the
government to develop the port. The famous SriRam temple
is located at the entrance of the town.
TARAPUR:
The
industrial centre of the taluka. A variety of chemical,
engineering and industrial product units are located in
this MIDC-developed area. Located just 12 kms from here,
the area houses atleast 2,500 industrial units, offering
basic infrastructure to the entrepreneur. The Bhabha
Atomic Research Centre (BARC) as well as the nation's
maiden nuclear power plant TAPS (Tarapur Atomic Power
Station) is here. Already work has commenced for another
nuke-power plant here.
MANOR:
The
'Gateway' to Palghar town is located just 21 kms from
here. It is through this area, the National Highway No.
8 Mumbai-Ahmedabad passes. The place is known for its
earthernware products, besides being a peaceful
town.Agriculture is the main occupation here.
PALGHAR
CITY:
The
taluka headquarter, which administers the affairs of
200-plus villages. A string of rice mills is located
here, besides a number of private industrial estates
housing many industrial units manufacturing a variety of
engineering, electrical, stationary,
pharmaceutical,textile and chemical products. The local
rail-head and the main ST bus depot forms the nucleus of
the town. Efforts are on to make Palghar the new
district headquarter, after bifurcating Thane district,
so that better administration of tribal areas of Wada,
Dahanu, Jawhar, Vasai, and other nearby areas could be
done effectively.
