Savantwadi is the one of the most popular taluka place of Sindhudurga District known for market for fish, coconut, betelnuts, Jackfruit; wooden articles. Mangoes, amsoles, and beautifully adorned with lush green forests and hills from three sides it has got various waterfalls is also adorned with beautiful sea to its west (Arabian Sea).

According to 91 cenus total population was 21,305. But today it is round abt 40,000. 

Today it has completed its 300 years of formation. According to local members it is told that it was setteled in 18th centuary. First of all Sawantwadi Sansthan's capital was charata. Under its influence came city Vengurla, Pedne, Kudal. Last Rular King was Shivaji Raje Shivram Bhonsale who's Rajya Abhishek as conducted in this city. He was M.L.A. for 25 years. After independence Sawantwadi was governed as sansthan for 8 years i.e. upto 1956. He was known as 6th Khemsawant. This city has got history of Electric, Water Supply and free education for Girls since last 300 years. Mahatma Gandhi visited Amboli and stayed for 2 days in this period he called this Sansthan as Ramrajya.

Today R.P.D. College which is shifted Belgaum which was first located in Sawantwadi 300 years ago, and today its second branch is working in Sawantwadi.

Sansthan built two Rajwadas for King, one on Narendra Hill and other in local city for this workers dug out the soil and by this way the moti Talav that is reservior of water was created. As workers got pearls in this work it was named as Moti Talav.

Sansthan King collected workers from borishirod and developed kalasutri, wood products, and chitrakathi. He appointed 3 guards for security named Upralkar, Helekar, Danelkar on 3 sides. They always guarded the boundries of Sawantwadi by their skills and technique. 

King gave some lands to his court people and after that the land was known by their Sir Names like Sabnis Wada, Khaskilwada.

Sawantwadi has got one more water resvoir called (atnesgwar tali) it has got water through out the year. Sawantwadi Nagar Palika has complited 100 years and recorded as first Nagarpalika in Maharashtra to complete 100 years. Today the wooden articles are exported to germany and france. Ganghifa a game of 102 cards was first started by Sawantwadi.

Deluxe Hotels with pure veg. and nonveg food facility is available in this city, recently chinise food is also available in reasonable cost, but specility lies only in malvani food.

Today the communication and travelling is fast and cheqp, Sawantwadi has got railway station 8 kms away, one can travel to karnataka, Goa, Mumbai, Kerala, and other destinations very easily. Daily round about 12 to 13 buses are available from Goa to to Mumbai. They are divided in sitting class and sleeper calass too. 

BANDA :  It is main village of old Sawantwadi. It is famous for Coconut, Cashewnut and Bettelnut. It has a historical place called Leneghumat.
